I love the way his work invites touch and intimacy without serving any particular purpose beyond the viewer’s response. In terms of functional ceramics, the work itself invites touch partly because it’s required. We have to remove the lid of a teapot to pour hot water into it, and there’s no way around touching a handle when you’re trying to take a sip of coffee.
So, this leaves me to wonder how much my work invites touch beyond the idea that it is utilitarian, and how important is this to me? Well, when someone is using one of my mugs, I want them to feel something similar to what I feel when I look at the picture above.
